Restoring Your Smile with Crowns

When you are searching for a dentist, you want to find the fit that is best for your needs. At Burdick Dentistry, we make it our goal to provide a wide range of restorative dentistry services for those who need to repair damaged teeth in the Littleton, CO area. Dental crowns are one of the most common treatment options and are often necessary for patients dealing with painful dental issues.

How Crowns Work

A crown, which is also known as a cap, is a fixed prosthetic device designed to restore damaged teeth. Unlike a filling, a crown is cemented onto existing teeth, covering the entire surface. After thoroughly examining a patient’s dental health, Dr. Burdick determines whether a crown is necessary for treatment. The most common uses for crowns in restorative dentistry include the following:

  • Support of a tooth without enough tooth structure to shore up a large filling
  • Prevention of breakage of a weak tooth
  • Bridge attachment
  • Coverage of an implant tooth

At Burdick Dentistry, we use crowns made from metal, porcelain, or a combination of the two materials. While metal crowns provide greater durability, the appearance of porcelain or ceramic crowns looks more natural in the mouth.

Our Treatment Process

In the majority of cases, our crown placement process takes two to three visits over a period of three to four weeks. Patients undergoing dental crown treatment can expect the following plan:

  • Numbing the area to allow for the removal of decay
  • Re-shaping of the affected tooth to ensure the crown fits properly
  • Taking an impression to facilitate the creation of a custom crown
  • Installation of a temporary crown made from acrylic resin until the custom crown is completed
  • Cementing of the final crown in place

Once a crown is placed, it can last up to 15 years as long as the patient follows the steps for good care. Daily oral care is necessary to keep a crown healthy.
